How is the length of the penis measured?
         
Measuring penis circumference
  Measuring the length of the penis during an erection
  The length of the penis is measured during a full erection. Using a tape measure or a ruler, begin measuring at the base of the shaft at your stomach and measure to the tip of the penis (Picture 1).

Please note that when using a ruler, the scale usually does not begin at 0.0". When measuring the complete length, you can usually add 0.2"-0.3" to the final result. Example: If the scale on the ruler begins at 0.2" and the final measured length of the penis is 5.9", the penis is actually 6.1" long.

When using a tape measure and measuring along the surface of the penis, the final result may not be accurate if the penis is curved or bent upwards or downwards (the shortest distance between two points is a straight line). In order for men to accurately compare the length of their penis despite different penis shapes, the shortest distance between the base of the penis and the tip of the penis has to be measured.

  Measuring the length of a non-erect penis
  In its non-erect state, the penis varies in length. To measure the non-erect penis accurately, an average length has to be comprised by measuring multiple times (see information on measuring above and the following example).

  Determining the type of penis: „meaty penis“ or „blood filled penis“
    A so-called „meaty penis“ does not grow significantly during an erection and its size remains almost the same. During an erection, a so-called „blood filled penis“ is much larger than in its non-erect state. A penis is classified as a „meaty penis“ when it only grows up to 1.9 times during an erection, i.e. barely doubles in length. If the penis more than doubles (original length times 2) during an erection, it is classified as a „blood filled penis“.
